Tennessee Williams (1911–1983) was an American playwright and one of the most significant dramatists of the 20th century. He was given the name Tennessee by college colleagues inspired by his southern accent and the fact that his father hailed from Tennessee. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama: for “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1948 and for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” in 1955. Additionally, his plays “The Glass Menagerie” from 1945 and “The Night of the Iguana” from 1961 won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award.
